Biography-Salon Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru

Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru is the deputy president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party initiated by rapper and artist Bobi Wine. A holder of a joint PhD in Peace and Conflict Resolution from Sewanee University, USA and Uganda’s Makerere University, she has done extensive work in the Civil Society sector and grassroot politics. 

Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru is determined: Genocide prevention should be a lifelong learning journey. It needs to be mainstreamed and not just dealt with as it occurs or is about to occur. Budget allocations need to be given priority to work on prevention. To a great extent, her life as a war-widow and single mother, since August of 2001, has a lot to do with her current passion for genocide prevention - in particular, her experiences with the aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide and the West Nile Massacre of 1979 as well as the Kanungu Massacre in 2000. We will discuss gender aspects in her work and colonial continuities that cannot be counted out when thinking about gender and social relations in formerly colonized communities.
