„Turning poison into medicine“  A generational healing WORKSHOP with Nicole Pearson

Theatre artist and activist Nicole Pearson invites you to a collaborative experience inspired by her latest play, “hand, breast, heart”.

Often conversations around colonialism and decolonization are so abstract we overlook what we are discussing. They become competing narratives locked in a power struggle over who will win. We can engage in these conversations differently. We can explore how we carry and embody the harms we seek to address.

In two days (3 workshops sessions), we will explore inherited legacies, get familiar with the hierarchies we embody, and how these two forces shape us. We will map the terrain of our power and vulnerabilities. We will learn how our presence impacts the spaces we live in and the people we encounter. We will weave our experiences together into one story.

The Workshops

Day 1  (Saturday - 10:30 am til 5:00 pm): 

Embodiment & Connection

On Saturday we will do both the Healing and Connecting workshops. There will be a 45-minute

lunch break in between.

Workshop 1 Embodiment: In the first workshop, we will learn the basics of embodied practice.

We connect to our bodies through breath and movement. From that connection, we practice

locating and identifying bodily sensations.

Workshop 2 Connection: In the second workshop, we connect to our ancestors through

embodied practice. We work with and through the emotions that come up in that process.

Finally, we express and share that experience via movement, sound, and gesture.

Day 2 (Sunday - 12:00 pm/noon til 4:00 pm):

Workshop 3 Expression: The third and final workshop weaves our individual expressions into

a theatrical piece. In creating the piece we practice the awareness of the hierarchies we

embody and care for the most vulnerable.

Who can participate: The workshop is open to all.  We will explore how we embody patriarchal white supremacist hierarchy. To do this we use whatever discomfort being in proximity to other bodies brings up as a tool to learn how to see and care for ourselves and one another.
