Presentation: Speaking Out In Times Of Repression

The essential role of art and cultural expression in the human existence is undeniable. People of all walks of life have taken to some form of artistic form to express thoughts, fears, hopes, dreams, emotions and political realities. The condition of any given society can be understood from the freedom of expression it grants to its artists – be it music, painting, poetry, literature, performance, theater, film or whatever else…

To create a better future means learning from the past. And fortunately, academic research has also dealt with the question of repression against art and cultural expression in many eras and many places on the planet.

In this presentation, Chilean artist and activist Verónica Troncoso presents her research and experiences on the ways in which art and culture developed languages ​​to resist during the civil-military dictatorship in Chile 1973-1990. She will be joined by Lotta Schäfer, curator and community facilitator at the SPORE initiative. Together they will draw on their mutually interwoven histories in order to draw conclusions –together and in exchange with the public– on what it means to speak in times of repression.
