Art workshop
𝑾𝒉𝒐 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒎𝒂𝒛𝒐𝒏?
In the first art workshop of our programme 𝓡𝓮𝓬𝓵𝓪𝓲𝓶𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓐𝓶𝓪𝔃𝓸𝓷𝓼, we will focus on the roman marble statue 𝑾𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝑨𝒎𝒂𝒛𝒐𝓷 by Polykleitos of Argos, from the classical collection of the Altes Museum in Berlin.
According to myth, the Amazons were independent warrior women who lived far away from men. Yet they are often depicted fighting the “greatest” Greek heroes and they usually end up wounded, defeated, or killed. Their 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒔 are not just physical: they reflect the male-centred perspective through which their stories have been told. If we take a closer look at this myth, we can see how these narratives have historically shaped the appropriation not only of FLINTA* bodies, but also of the land.
In the workshop, we will explore how classical myths depict legendary warrior women and uncover the connections with the colonial history of the Amazon region. As part of this exploration, we will be joined by the queer feminist collective Nettles and Poppies, who will prepare lunch and food for thought while sharing insights into their ecofeminist practice of 'cooking and planting in the ruins of capitalism'.
Through creative exercises, somatic practices, conversations and shared food, we will engage with the legendary warrior women and explore the intersection of gender, ecology and power. Together, we will reimagine Amazon narratives and co-create an alternative representation of the 𝑾𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝑨𝒎𝒂𝒛𝒐𝓷.
Feeling called? Then jump on your horse and ride with us on this journey to heal the Amazon 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 .
