Über die Veranstaltung

For Book #5 we are reading the Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower which finally reached the Bestseller list in 2020, 14 years after Butler’s death.  This widely acclaimed dystopian novel provides commentary on both the climate crisis and social inequality. Though written in 1993, Butler’s insight and understanding of the human condition shows her ability to literally see into the future. If you or your friends have made any jokes about how it seems like we are living in Orwell’s 1984 or Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, then this is an absolute must read. All sessions will be led by WGCU founder, Diana Arce We will read this book over 3 total sessions. 3 different groups (meeting every other week) are offered for Book #5!

  • Thursdays, starting June 3rd, 18:00 / 6PM CET-
  • Thursdays, starting June 3rd, 19:30 / 7:30 PM CET      - BIPOC Only
  • Fridays, starting June 4th, 19:30 / 7:30 PM CET

We’ve teamed up with Hopscotch Reading Room, Kurfürstenstraße 14, 10785 Berlin (open Monday - Saturday, 13-19), where you can purchase the book for 14,50, supporting Berlin’s only POC owned and operated book shop! Sign up using this form. Spaces are limited and distributed first come, first serve! New members, please also read the article 10 Tips on Receiving Critical Feedback: A Guide for Activists by Brooke Anderson, which we use as guidelines for communication. If you have any questions about this text, please let me know at your earliest convenience as we may not have time to discuss this in group. There is minimum contribution upfront to hold your spot of 20 Euros/ Reduced BIPOC 10 Euros. It’s taken quite a bit of planning in organizing the groups, keeping them small, so last minute cancellations have caused some trouble and this deposit is aimed to prevent this. Book club is donations based (current participants have donated between 20-80 per Book so far) so I’ve chosen the lowest amount as the deposit for a spot. Payment is required immediately after your session time is confirmed. No one will be turned away due to funds, so please get in contact via email if you need to. I accept paypal but prefer bank transfers.
